For over 60 years, Slumberland Mattress® has been dedicated to helping our customers get the best night’s sleep possible. Our journey began in 1961 when our founder, Morris Suson, opened the first Slumberland store in Minnesota, USA.
Morris had a vision to provide high quality mattresses at affordable prices directly to consumers. This was revolutionary at the time when most mattress shopping involved negotiating with intimidating salespeople at department stores. Morris wanted to change the narrative and make the mattress buying experience stress-free.
That guiding philosophy still drives us today. From our humble beginnings, Slumberland has grown to over 160 retail stores across the United States. We’ve built our reputation on selling top brands like Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Tempur-Pedic, and our own Slumberland Mattress® brand.

Slumberland Through the Years
To understand our commitment to quality, it’s helpful to look back on key milestones in Slumberland’s history:
- 1961 – Morris Suson opens the first Slumberland store in Roseville, Minnesota. The 5,000 square foot store stocks Sealy mattresses and box springs.
- 1970 – Slumberland grows to 7 stores in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. The original store doubles in size.
- 1980 – The company expands to over 30 stores and builds a 80,000 distribution center. Slumberland launches its own private label mattress brand.
- 1990 – The 100th Slumberland store opens. Morris Suson retires and Ron Suson takes over as CEO.
- 2000 – Expansion continues to over 150 stores in 10 states across America’s Midwest. Slumberlandpartners with top brands like Tempur-Pedic.
- 2010 – Mattress Firm acquires a 58% stake in Slumberland. Over the next years, Slumberland opens stores across new states.
- 2020 – Slumberland celebrates 60 years in business! With 165+ stores, it is one of America’s largest mattress retailers.
